Sam joined the group in Dec 2014 as a research fellow in quantum technologies. He received obtained his BSc Physics degree from the University of Southampton in 2008 and then went on to obtain a PhD in Optoelectronics from the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), also at the University of Southampton. His PhD thesis investigated the way light travelled in photonic lightwave circuits by using near-field tunnelling spectral analysis after building a scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM). Sam was a research fellow in the Quantum, Light and Matter (QLM) group in Physics and Astronomy between 2012-2014 working on terahertz devices before returning to the ORC. Sam currently works on developing nonlinear waveguides for various applications in quantum technologies and has worked on multiple successful industry-led projects and works closely with Covesion Ltd.

In his spare time, Sam likes to play jazz piano, practise jujitsu, and study law.
